Lake Manyara National Park, nestled at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment in Northern Tanzania, is a compact yet incredibly diverse safari destination. Covering about 330 square kilometers, the park is celebrated for its lush landscapes, ranging from groundwater forests and acacia woodlands to open savannahs and the shimmering alkaline waters of Lake Manyara.
The park is most famous for its tree-climbing lions, a rare and fascinating behavior that makes wildlife viewing here truly unique. Visitors can also witness large flocks of flamingos and pelicans along the lake shores, as well as elephants, giraffes, hippos, zebras, and buffalo. With over 400 species of birds, Lake Manyara is a paradise for birdwatchers.
Beyond game drives, the park offers opportunities for canoeing (seasonal), cultural encounters with local communities, and breathtaking views of the Rift Valley escarpment. Though smaller than the Serengeti or Tarangire, Lake Manyara delivers a rich and intimate safari experience, making it a perfect addition to any Northern Tanzania safari itinerary.
